This example is amazing how do I setup this up? I’m currently using doom emacs with org-roam but since I mainly use emacs for org-roam I’d be down to change any configs.
thanks for the help

This screenshot is from four years ago and I don’t think the person who uploaded it is still hanging around in this forum. In addition, the screenshot is based on V1 of Org-roam, so you cannot make the window on the right where backlinks are shown to look the same.
What does yours look like at the moment? If you are using Doom Emacs, I would have thought your Org-roam would look almost identical with a few differences. Would you care to share a screenshot? Perhaps people here can give you some direction. It’s best to show us what you have got and tell us what elements you want to replicate in your setup.
As for me, I do not use Doom. But I would have thought you could just turn on org-modern
or org-superstar
— the latter seems to be shipped with Doom anyway.
Sure! Sorry I know this is annoying but I can only upload one image as I’m too new of a user apparently so I made an album and in the text I reference them by number. Org-Roam Setup — ImgBB
Thanks for those links, I hadn’t heard of those before. I’m still very new to emacs, org, and org-roam so still getting the hang of things. Didn’t realize that was from v1, but it doesn’t need to look the same or anything. I’m mainly interested in getting more functional windows and integrating org-roam into org-mode’s org-agenda and todo system. I managed to get org-roam v2 ( I assume, from what I read it’s the default in doom emacs now ) and org-roam ui functional but the ui opens in a browser window.
I know I’m running into issues because I dove right into doom rather than learning plain emacs but I’m okay with that level of learning curve. I am misunderstanding how to integrate things, I need to dedicate some time to diving into the docs because even so far with this really minimal setup it’s the easiest I’ve ever taken notes. The way I’ve been using it is that made some hotkeys to find nodes or insert nodes into whatever node in currently in. I’ve been using root nodes as the a directory system essentially.
6 & 7: examples of inserting into current note
3: example of moving around to other nodes
8: org-roam-ui - this opens in a browser window and
2: I thought I'd be able to open it in emacs ( using the browser within emacs? ) but it does not work
1: my current hotkeys, figured I'd show the commands I'm using most often just in case I'm missing some obvious ones.
I was using obsidian for my note taking system but it’s not for me. I liked the all in one UI but I didn’t like other aspects of it. So far though the keyboard workflow has made diving into emacs worth it. If I could get the backlinks, a graph, a visual canvas ( not sure if this one is even possible in emacs or if it would even work well ) then that would be the perfect setup. Examples from the obsidian website below:
5: The way the graph and the text is all in one window. I'm using i3 so swapping back and forth between emacs and the browser window for org-roam-ui isn't too bad but if it could just be a buffer I hop to that would be better.
4: This canvas thing would be very cool for notes that are more visual.
9: and finally a kanban board but honestly I think I just need to get the hang of org-agena.
Any help, links, suggestions, ideas, or anything else that might help would be highly appreciated. Even if it’s super simple stuff that y’all might think is obvious - it probably isn’t to me yet!
Your excitement comes through, and you have a lot on your mind. Can we agree that we summarize your interests and queries like this below?
You’re after these two:
You like the keyboard workflow, but coming from Obsidian, you want to see possibilities to retain the following visual elements from it.
Graph view. Currently using Org-roam UI, with the UI opening in a browser, but you would prefer it within Emacs.
Visual canvas for more organized, visual notes.
Kanban board, likely through Org-agenda.
I will be brief in each of the points.
Two things.
I don’t know what you mean by “functional windows”. Judging from the screenshots, you haven’t been using the “Org-roam buffer” feature where backlinks for a current note is displayed. I suggest to consult this section of the manual.
There is a Wiki on the GitHub repo, with a lot of users sharing their tricks and hacks (small ones, mostly, to make things a little easier with Org-roam). I suggest you have a look.
I don’t use Org-roam this way, but many others do. In my opinion, there are three broad categories of things people do with Org-roam: (1) manage TODOs and tasks, (2) store and retrieve knowledge, and (3) think and write. I have written up a short article as a comment with some links to more resources. It may be useful for you.
The built-in browser is essentially text-only (with some support for images). If you are interested in a full browser within Emacs, see the following:
Emacs is not good at graphics and visuals. Discourse user @cpbotha has published org-roam-canvas
that connects Org-roam with Obsidian. See this comment.
Not sure how this can be achieved. I don’t use Org-agenda, either. I can’t really comment. I’ll invite others to jump in. There is a short discussion from 2023.
